What makes the new format particularly interesting is its focus on making the test fairer, more agile, smarter and better aligned with real academic communication.
With features such as:
* Shorter reading passages for a more focused test experience
* Multistage adaptive testing, allowing the difficulty to respond to a student’s performance
* Tasks designed around real academic communication rather than simply testing memorised language
* Passage writing replacing the traditional essay format, making writing more focused and purposeful
…the overall experience can mean less pressure, better engagement and greater confidence for students navigating one of the most important steps towards studying abroad.
And my personal favourite? The new scoring system!
The updated TOEFL iBT scoring scale of 1–6, aligned with the CEFR levels, makes English proficiency much easier to understand and interpret.
Instead of looking at a score in isolation, students, universities and counsellors can now get a clearer picture of where a student’s actual English-language ability stands.
